If you’re using a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic or Mounjaro, you probably started it for weight loss or diabetes management. But many of my clients report unexpected emotional challenges, such as anxiety or panic attacks, soon after beginning treatment. You’re not alone, and there’s emerging scientific evidence explaining why this happens and what you can do about it.

Why Anxiety or Panic Might Occur on GLP-1 Medications
GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) mimic natural hormones that regulate appetite, metabolism, and blood sugar. However, these medications also influence mood and emotional regulation because GLP-1 receptors are widely expressed in brain regions associated with stress, anxiety, and depression.
Recent research based on FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) data found a notable increase in psychiatric adverse events, including anxiety and panic symptoms, among GLP-1 users. These symptoms are believed to be linked to changes in neurotransmitter balance, hormonal fluctuations, and rapid physiological changes caused by significant weight loss (Chen et al., 2024).
Social Media Highlights the Real-World Impact
A 2023 study by Arillotta and colleagues explored how GLP-1 medications affect mental health through analysis of thousands of posts on platforms like Reddit, TikTok, and YouTube. The study discovered users frequently discussing anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, mood swings, and other emotional issues. While some reported mood improvements due to successful weight loss, many others experienced heightened anxiety and emotional distress after starting GLP-1 medications (Arillotta et al., 2023).
These firsthand accounts emphasize that emotional side effects aren’t isolated incidents; they are real, shared experiences that deserve attention and understanding.
Rapid Weight Loss and Anxiety: An Underrecognized Link
Rapid weight loss, common among GLP-1 users, can trigger acute stress responses, causing or exacerbating anxiety symptoms. Dramatic calorie restriction or rapid dietary shifts lead to nutrient imbalances and hormonal changes that significantly impact mental health.
Practical Ways to Support Your Mental Health
If you experience anxiety or panic symptoms while using GLP-1 medications, consider these steps:
- Talk openly with your healthcare provider: Your doctor might adjust your medication or dosage to ease emotional symptoms.
- Prioritize nutrition: Ensure you’re consuming nutrient-dense foods rich in essential vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc.
- Use stress-reduction techniques: Practices like mindfulness meditation, gentle yoga, or deep-breathing exercises can stabilize your nervous system and reduce anxiety.
- Seek emotional support: Counseling or therapy can provide personalized coping strategies and emotional tools to manage anxiety effectively.
Final Thoughts
GLP-1 medications can offer significant metabolic benefits, but it’s essential to be mindful of potential emotional impacts. Understanding why these emotional changes happen helps you manage your health journey compassionately and confidently. Your emotional well-being is as important as physical health—both deserve care and attention.
